March – June 2026
From March through mid-June, the Charleston Fisher House was rarely quiet. Neighbors cooked dinner, companies rolled up their sleeves, partners turned events into gifts, and the wider community kept showing up for the veteran families staying just minutes from the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center.
Here’s a look back at a spring defined by generosity — meal by meal, visit by visit.

Cuisine Rescue Delivers 100 Sandwiches to the Charleston Fisher House
In March, the Charleston nonprofit Cuisine Rescue arrived with 100 pulled pork and brisket sandwiches — enough to cover several days of meals for the veteran families staying at the House. A simple, generous gesture that took the pressure of cooking off families already carrying a heavy load.
Harleston Village Association Brings a Home-Cooked Meal to the Fisher House
The Harleston Village Association turned the House kitchen into a neighborhood dinner, serving meatloaf, risotto, and brownies. For families far from home during a loved one’s treatment, a plate of comfort food is its own kind of care.
Order of St. John Serves 30 Guests Through the Fisher House Meal Train
The Order of St. John cooked chicken stroganoff for 30 guests through the Meal Train program, filling the common spaces with the warmth of a shared table — and reminding families they aren’t navigating this season alone.
Warriors Haven and Air & Space Forces Association Serve a Meal Train Dinner
Warriors Haven teamed up with the Air & Space Forces Association Charleston for a homemade spaghetti dinner — another Meal Train evening that brought veterans and volunteers together over a familiar, hearty meal.
Modus21 Volunteers and Serves a Taco Bar at the Charleston Fisher House

The Royal Missionary Baptist Church YWA closed out the spring meal calendar with rotisserie chicken, yellow rice, string beans, rolls, and dessert — a Sunday-supper spread served with real hospitality.
Time & Treasure
Volunteers & Gifts
Others gave their hands, their resources, and their time — workplace teams rolling up their sleeves at the House, partners turning events into support, and friends who simply showed up for veteran families.
Pinnacle Financial Partners Volunteers at the Charleston Fisher House
Pinnacle Financial Partners brought a crew to the House for a day of facility projects, then treated the families to BBQ from Swig & Swine. A day of both elbow grease and easy conversation — exactly the kind of partnership the House runs on.
Mariner Wealth Advisors Volunteers and Gives $2,500 to the Charleston Fisher House
The Mariner Wealth Advisors team spent a Friday volunteering at the House and presented a $2,500 gift from the Mariner Foundation — time and treasure, in the same visit.
Coastal Carolina Antique Auto Club Car Show Raises $500 for Fisher House
For the second year running, the Coastal Carolina Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America and Bessinger’s Barbeque turned a community car show into a $500 gift for veteran families — proof that almost any gathering can become a fundraiser with a little heart behind it.
The Charleston RiverDogs Spend an Afternoon with Fisher House Families
The Charleston RiverDogs spent an afternoon with Fisher House families: live music, food, raffle prizes, player meet-and-greets, and a visit from Charlie T. RiverDog. For one afternoon, the worry of a hospital stay gave way to something a lot like a day at the ballpark.
1,000 Flags Fly at the 11th Annual Daniel Island Field of Honor
The 11th Annual Daniel Island Field of Honor planted 1,000 American flags at River Landing Park, on display through July 5, with proceeds supporting the Charleston Fisher House. It’s a striking tribute — and a reminder of how many neighbors stand behind this mission.
Reflection
Honoring Service & Looking Back
A few moments this spring asked us to look up from the day-to-day — to honor a lifetime of service, and to remember the history beneath our own front steps.
Honoring Wayne Walker’s 18 Years of Service at Richmond Fisher House
Wayne Walker — retired Richmond Fisher House Manager and Army Command Sergeant Major — received an Outstanding Service Award for 18 years of caring for more than 14,000 veteran families. His example is the standard every Fisher House aspires to.
The Layered History of 150 Wentworth Street
We also took a long look back at 150 Wentworth Street itself. The 0.93-acre lot has carried nearly two centuries of Charleston history — from a Confederate-era mansion to the home that now welcomes veteran families.
Every stay is made possible by this community.
There are many ways to keep a veteran family close to their loved one during treatment — volunteer, host a fundraiser, or give.
